Justin Gaethje successfully conquered Tony Ferguson through a TKO victory in the UFC 249 battle which was held without spectators at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, Jacksonville, Florida, Sunday (05/10/2020).
This is the first major sporting event in the United States to be held since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The TKO victory made Gaethje grasp the UFC interim lightweight class belt, and at the same time had the opportunity to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov.
UFC President Dana White said he was satisfied because the fight could take place without obstacles.
“This is going well. I am pleased with the way tonight’s match took place,” White said.
Strict health protocols were implemented during UFC 249.
Referees, commentators, and staff are required to wear masks. The fighters are also only allowed to be accompanied by a cornerman.
The fight between Goethje vs Ferguson lasted a little one-sided. Gaethje hit Ferguson since the beginning of the fight.
The situation lasted until the fourth round until referee Herb Dean stopped the fight after Gaethje’s left hand struck the battered face of Ferguson to secure Gaethje’s victory.
Despite rejoicing in the victory, Gaethje still craved a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
“Khabib is the best in the world. I have worked hard since I was four for challenges like this, and I am happy to represent the US challenging the best fighters of Dagestan (Nurmagomedov’s hometown) or Russia,” said the 31-year-old fighter.
